Portrait of Michel de Nostredame, 16th century engraving
On 14 December 1503, Michel de Nostredame was born in a bourgeois house in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in the heart of Roman Provence. His father, Jaume de Nostredame, was a notary; his mother, Reynière de Saint-Rémy, came from a family of physicians and astrologers who had converted to Catholicism.
The child grew up beneath a Provençal sky filled with stars. His maternal grandfathers, both learned physicians, introduced him early to mathematics, astrology, the Kabbalah, and Greco-Arabic medicine. It is said that young Michel could read the stars before he even knew how to write.
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the ancient Roman Glanum, immersed Nostradamus's childhood in an atmosphere of millennial grandeur, its Roman ruins, its farmhouses surrounded by olive trees and lavender, forming the cradle of the future prophet.
Beneath the light of the stars hides the truth that men refuse to see.
Centuries, IV-77
"The stars incline, they do not compel."
NOSTRADAMUS, 1503–1566
